    • @HeatherStorta
      @HeatherStorta 5 днів тому

      You kind of still need an idea of foot circumference. Or you could guess, based on the foot size charts here. Then you could figure out your stitch count based on your gauge, and make a sock long enough for the longest foot length plus desired leg/cuff height, plus maybe 2 extra inches to account for the sock stretching over the heel. www.craftyarncouncil.com/standards/foot-size-charts

    Which type is the most comfortable?

    • @HeatherStorta
      @HeatherStorta 7 днів тому

      I think that likely depends on your foot anatomy and what you consider comfortable -- for folks that don't like the feel of seams or ridges, then one of the ones that has minimal ridges on the inside from decrease lines might be more comfortable (so, for example, one of the rounded versions with staggered decreases.) If you have a wide and flat toe box, then a wedge shape works well, but if you have a much longer big toe then that shape may not be as comfortable (an "anatomical" toe shape would be better in that case.) Every foot is different!

    • @HeatherStorta

      It can tend to be, yes - since there are slipped stitches involved, and those can bring the stitch gauge tighter. It depends on the knitter, though!

    Love your video! Do you find that trying on this sample heels helps you get a sense of what heel is best for your foot? You're welcome! Don't dread it -- it isn't too complicated once you understand what's happening! Biggest issue I have when working it is remembering that those stitches aren't "real" stitches and need to be *not* worked in the stitch pattern accidentally, lol.

    Certainly a different approach, however, those loose threads on the inside would bother me.

    • @HeatherStorta
      @HeatherStorta 14 днів тому

      From the wrap and turn short rows? They'd be less loose in a more appropriate gauge (I was working loosely for the video) -- but you could also not pick up the wraps and that would help eliminate strands, or use a different short row method all together. It's not a toe for everyone, but it's nice to have options!

  • @MissHoyden

    Excellent tutorial! I’ve used Judy’s magic cast on on two needles- because that gives me both sides ready. It’s great to have another approach. Thank you ! (As for cuff down, I like having the graft on top. I might be in the minority.)

    • @HeatherStorta
      @HeatherStorta 15 днів тому

      I'm glad you liked it! Judy's Magic instead of (or as the) provisional is a great option with this toe, since you have those live stitches ready to go for when you work in the round! (I, too, like the graft at the top of the toe with the cuff-down variation. And if you use a different color yarn for the graft like in the thumbnail, then you have an easy spot to see to undo the toe if it gets holes!)

      @HeatherStorta 17 днів тому

      Yes, it will usually tell you how many stitches. Typically it's an odd number of stitches --so it'd be 3, 5, or 7 etc. But not always.

  • @carolozbolt5118

    Can the sweet tomato heel be worked as an afterthought heel?

    • @HeatherStorta
      @HeatherStorta 19 днів тому

      No, not really. Since you have to work rounds all the way around the circumference in between each wedge, that's not possible with the way the afterthought heel works. You *could* do a "plain" short row heel though, by working on only half the live stitches and then grafting the heel closed to the other half when done. But any heel method that adds in full rounds in between working back and forth won't work with an afterthought heel.

    Hi Heather, great and new technique to me! It really solves the little locking bumps which can be very visible depending on the yarn and how they are executed. And compared to locking the ladderback jacquard seems also easy to do. Only thing I wonder is that it works well with geometric patterns but with more complicated jacquard, you have to set up ladderbacks all the time. I have to practice, get the feel of it because I will definitely use it! Thank you for sharing ❤️👍

    • @HeatherStorta
      @HeatherStorta Місяць тому

      You are so welcome! Yeah, complicated patterns require resolving ladderbacks and beginning ladderbacks frequently, which can start to get a little confusing! Some knitters use knit stitches with the ladderbacks, but I like using the purl stitch since it's helpful to spot which stitches are my ladderback stitches in the sea of stockinette stitches.

    Hi Heather, thanks for sharing this, I did not know this decrease 😃! So you use it to decrease more. It looks less bulky than k3tog or k4tog or sssk and ssssk. The swatch shows a sharper raglan, full fashioned. Blended would also work I think? Where is the cabled decrease worked most?

    • @HeatherStorta
      @HeatherStorta Місяць тому

      Blended would work too, yes! It's mostly seen in "full fashioned" shoulder shaping, where the shoulder seam is moved from the top shoulder line to a more diagonal line at the back shoulder. You need rapid decreases in the back piece to get the sharper diagonal line there for that seam. But you could use these any place you need a multi-stitch decrease! It is less bulky than its counterparts, very true!

    @karenalbery2773 Місяць тому

    I have never seen these decreases before. When would you need to use these?

    • @HeatherStorta
      @HeatherStorta Місяць тому

      You'd use these any time you need to make 2 or 3 (or 4!) decreases at the same time. So you could use it as a replacement for a k3tog or k4 tog, for example. They are most often found in "full-fashioned" shoulder shaping where the shoulder seam is moved to the back instead of sitting at the top of the shoulder line -- you use these in the back piece to get a sharper/faster decrease line along that seam. (Look at high-end store-bought cashmere sweaters and they will most likely have these full fashioned shoulder seams with cabled decreases.)

    Can you do a reinforced stitch with the fleegle heel?

    • @HeatherStorta
      @HeatherStorta Місяць тому

      You could with the heel turn portion that is worked back and forth, for sure. Not as easily with the portion with the increases, though. For that section you'd need to cut the reinforcing thread at each side of the sole sts and join a new strand at each pass across those stitches (hopefully that makes sense.) (Oh -- I misunderstood and though you asked about reinforcing thread!) A heel stitch-- yes, you could work a heel stitch here -- it might get a bit complicated since the stitch count is changing in the "gusset" area and then you are dealing with the short rows in the heel turn, but it's certainly possible.
